Launceston falls away surprisingly quickly at Cataract Gorge. From Kings Bridge or First Basin, the South Esk River runs between steep rock walls, with easy paths around the basin and longer tracks continuing through the gorge to Duck Reach.
How to get there
The simplest road access is to First Basin at 72 Basin Road, West Launceston. This is where you will find the main car park, pool, lawns, inclinator and easy access to the chairlift and walking tracks.
First Basin parking is paid during daytime hours. A second entrance is available at the Cliff Grounds via Gorge Road in Trevallyn.
If you are staying in central Launceston, walking into the gorge can be more useful than driving. Head towards Kings Bridge and follow the Cataract Walk along the northern side of the South Esk River towards First Basin.
For visitors with limited mobility, an inclinator links the First Basin car park level with the café and picnic-ground levels.
What to see and do
First Basin
First Basin is the easiest place to understand the gorge before deciding how far you want to walk. The 900 m loop passes the lawns, gardens, swimming pool and river, with the chairlift crossing above the basin.
The route is easy and mostly sealed or formed, so it works well if you only have a short amount of time. The outdoor pool normally operates during the warmer months, although exact opening dates and lifeguard arrangements vary through the season.
Cataract Walk and Cliff Grounds
The Cataract Walk is the most useful route if you want to approach from the city. It runs for about 1 km from Kings Bridge towards the Cliff Grounds and First Basin, following an easy, mostly sealed path above the river.
The Cliff Grounds add Victorian gardens, the rotunda and the chairlift station. Wallabies, pademelons and peacocks are commonly seen around this side of the reserve.
The Zig Zag Track follows the opposite side of the gorge between Kings Bridge and First Basin. It is a similar distance but steeper, rocky and unsealed, so it should not be treated as an equivalent easy route.
Duck Reach
For a longer walk, continue from First Basin to Duck Reach. The trail is about 2 km each way and takes roughly 45 minutes in each direction, following gravel and dirt track through the gorge and past Sentinel Lookout.
Duck Reach Power Station was completed in 1895 and supplied electricity to Launceston for decades. The former station is now an interpretation centre, reached beside a suspension bridge over the South Esk River.
The walking connection reopened in November 2025 after repairs following a bushfire earlier that year.
The chairlift
The chairlift crosses First Basin and gives an elevated view over the water and surrounding gorge. Tickets are sold at the reserve. Operating arrangements can change, so check locally if the chairlift is important to your visit rather than planning around a fixed timetable.
How much time to allow
For a quick visit, allow around 60 to 90 minutes for First Basin, the suspension bridge and a short section of the gorge.
Allow two to three hours if you want to combine First Basin with the Cataract Walk and Cliff Grounds at a relaxed pace.
For Duck Reach, allow around half a day. The trail itself is roughly 45 minutes each way, but the power station, bridge and viewpoints make it worth allowing more time than the walking distance alone suggests.
The gorge works year-round. Warmer weather suits the pool and lawns, while periods of higher river flow can make the gorge more dramatic.
Practical notes
- First Basin parking is paid during daytime hours.
- Check current City of Launceston track and reserve information before longer walks.
- The pool has a defined operating season and supervision arrangements. Do not assume the natural river basin is lifeguarded.
- Duck Reach and the Zig Zag Track involve rougher and steeper terrain than the main First Basin paths.
- Dogs are not permitted at First Basin, Cliff Grounds or Duck Reach.
A suggested plan
If you are staying in central Launceston, walk in from Kings Bridge along the Cataract Walk, spend time around First Basin and cross to the Cliff Grounds. Add Duck Reach only if you want a longer walk; otherwise return to the city from the basin.
