Frenchmans Cap is one of Tasmania's clearest mountain profiles: a pale quartzite summit rising above rainforest, glacial lakes and the Franklin-Gordon wilderness. The walk is demanding without being an expedition-length traverse, which is part of its appeal.
The route is 54 km return and Parks Tasmania allows three to five days. The real variables are weather and whether the summit is safe on the day you reach Lake Tahune.
How to get there
The trailhead is on the Lyell Highway in Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, between Derwent Bridge and Queenstown. Walkers must register before departure and sign the track log.
The route begins by crossing the Franklin River on a swing bridge before climbing through rainforest and moorland towards Lake Vera.
What to see and do
Lake Vera
Lake Vera is the first major overnight stop. Vera Hut sleeps 20 and has a toilet and rainwater tank, with additional tent platforms and campsites nearby.
Barron Pass
The second stage climbs steadily through rainforest to Barron Pass at around 950 m. The pass is exposed to strong wind and poor visibility, and the quartzite becomes significantly more serious when wet, icy or snow-covered.
Lake Tahune
Tahune Hut sits beside Lake Tahune beneath the summit. It sleeps 24 and has a toilet and rainwater tank, with limited tent platforms in the surrounding forest.
The summit
The summit track gains roughly 450 m from Tahune Hut and includes steep scrambling. It is well cairned, but that does not make it an all-weather objective. Parks Tasmania advises against attempting the final ascent in poor conditions.
How much time to allow
Three days is possible for strong walkers in settled weather, but four days creates a far more useful rhythm: Lake Vera, Lake Tahune, summit and return towards Vera, then out to the highway. Five days gives more room to wait for a summit window.
The correct trip can still finish without the summit. Cloud, wind, rain, ice or snow on the quartzite are valid reasons to turn around.
Practical notes
- Walker registration is required.
- A valid national parks pass is required for Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.
- Hut space is not a guarantee. Carry a tent suitable for alpine conditions.
- Maximum stay at both Vera and Tahune huts is one night.
- Carry enough food for delays and equipment for cold, wet and windy conditions at any time of year.
- Do not attempt the summit in poor visibility, strong wind, rain, ice or snow.
A suggested plan
Use four days as the default: trailhead to Lake Vera, Vera to Tahune, summit only if conditions suit followed by a return towards Vera, then the final walk out. Add a fifth day if the forecast suggests you may need to wait at Tahune for a safe summit window.
