From Strahan, the journey starts across the broad water of Macquarie Harbour before turning into the lower Gordon River and the rainforest of Tasmania's west coast. Hells Gates and Sarah Island add the scale and history that make the cruise more than a river trip.

How to get there

From Hobart, allow roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by road. From Launceston, allow around 3.5 to 4 hours. The final approach to Strahan is winding and west coast weather can slow the journey, so these are better treated as realistic travel windows than exact drive times.

If the Gordon River cruise is the reason for travelling to Strahan, arrive the previous day rather than planning a long drive immediately before a fixed morning departure. The cruise terminals are on The Esplanade and are within the compact waterfront area.

The drive itself is part of the experience. The Lyell Highway crosses Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, with rainforest, river and mountain scenery along the route. Winter snow can occasionally affect the highway, so check road and park conditions before setting out.

What to see and do

Macquarie Harbour and Hells Gates

The journey begins on Macquarie Harbour. Cruise itineraries commonly head towards Hells Gates, the narrow entrance connecting the harbour with the Southern Ocean, before crossing the harbour towards the lower Gordon River.

It is worth treating this part of the trip as more than transit. Strahan feels sheltered from the waterfront, but the scale of Macquarie Harbour becomes much clearer once away from town.

The Gordon River

The lower Gordon River is the centre of the day. Tannin-stained water runs between dense temperate rainforest within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

In calm conditions the dark water can produce the mirror-like reflections associated with the river, but they are weather dependent rather than guaranteed. Major day cruises also include a rainforest landing, where boardwalks pass through old-growth forest containing species such as myrtle, sassafras and Huon pine.

Sarah Island

Sarah Island adds the human story. The island became a remote penal settlement in the nineteenth century and was later closely associated with Huon pine cutting and shipbuilding.

Cruise visits commonly include a guided walk among the surviving ruins. The contrast between the harbour setting and the severity of the island's history makes this one of the most worthwhile parts of the day.

Strahan waterfront and Long Bay

Leave some time for Strahan itself rather than treating the town purely as a departure point. The waterfront is compact and easy to explore on foot, while Long Bay offers a quieter view across Macquarie Harbour when conditions are still.

Hogarth Falls

If there is an hour available before or after the cruise, Hogarth Falls is the most useful short walk to add. The 2.4 km return Grade 2 track starts in Peoples Park and takes around 40 to 50 minutes through mixed forest and rainforest.

It is close enough to town to be a genuine addition rather than forcing another long drive into an already full day.

How much time to allow

Treat the Gordon River cruise as the main commitment for the day. Current services occupy a substantial part of the day, and departure times and seasonal schedules vary between operators.

For travellers arriving from Hobart or Launceston, two nights in Strahan makes the trip much easier: arrive on the first day, cruise on the second, then continue the west coast journey the following morning.

One night can work, but avoid planning a long same-morning drive into Strahan before a fixed cruise departure.

Practical notes

  • Confirm the current cruise itinerary and departure time directly with the operator before travelling.
  • Bring a waterproof layer. Conditions on Macquarie Harbour and Sarah Island can change quickly.
  • Check road conditions and park alerts before a winter drive to the west coast.
  • Allow more driving time than a simple distance calculation suggests because much of the route is winding.

A suggested plan

Arrive in Strahan the afternoon before your cruise and use the remaining daylight for the waterfront or Long Bay. Keep the next day for Macquarie Harbour, the Gordon River and Sarah Island, then add Hogarth Falls only if you still have time and energy when you return.
