MONA sits on the Derwent at Berriedale, away from the streets of central Hobart. The visit begins before you reach the galleries if you take the ferry: Hobart's waterfront falls behind as the museum comes into view above the river.
This is not a museum to fit between two fixed appointments. Its collection, changing exhibitions, food and grounds compete for attention. Decide whether you want a shorter introduction or enough time to explore without a tight schedule.
How to get there
MONA is around 11 km north of central Hobart. Its ferry departs Brooke Street Pier and takes approximately 30 minutes each way. Ferry travel and museum admission are separately ticketed. Check the timetable and book a return crossing that leaves enough time for the visit.
You can also arrive by road. The standard ferry approach includes steps, but an accessible alternative is available. Contact MONA in advance if you require assistance with access or travel.
What to see and do
Arrive by river
The ferry is part of the experience. It crosses the Derwent from the city waterfront and arrives at the museum's river landing. Leave time to reach Brooke Street Pier before departure, and remember that boarding times are separate from your museum entry reservation.

Explore the galleries
MONA combines historic objects and contemporary works in a distinctive underground museum. Exhibitions and installations change, so check what is showing before the visit. The museum's own digital guide, the O, is useful for understanding the collection as you go.
Some artworks and displays can be confronting, and particular installations may have separate bookings. A slow visit is more satisfying than trying to see every room.
Stay for the grounds or a meal
The river outlook, grounds and food offerings invite a longer stay. Dining times and bookings do not necessarily follow the museum's general opening pattern; confirm these independently if a meal is part of your plan.

How much time to allow
MONA suggests three to four hours to move through the museum at a faster pace, or most of a day if you plan to spend more time with the works and on site. Add the ferry journey to the total time away from central Hobart.
Practical notes
- The museum currently opens Thursday to Monday and closes Tuesday and Wednesday, subject to special dates.
- Advance museum bookings are recommended, including for Tasmanian visitors.
- Ferry tickets do not include museum admission.
- Some works may be unsuitable for younger visitors.
- Check accessibility, dining hours and separately ticketed experiences before travelling.
A suggested plan
Take a morning ferry from central Hobart, leave the middle of the day open for galleries and stop for food or the grounds before heading back. Explore Battery Point and Salamanca on another half-day rather than combining both visits into a short outing.
